The cleanest way to read AMD earnings' impact on Nvidia stock and the AI chip supply chain is to start with the actual sequence. AMD beat Q1 2026 expectations, guided Q2 revenue above consensus, and showed that its data-center business was still expanding fast. The stock jumped, and by the end of June the rally had spread well beyond AMD into memory, foundry, interconnect, and substrate names. That is not the same thing as saying Nvidia was being displaced.
AMD reported Q1 2026 EPS of $1.37 versus consensus of $1.29, revenue of $10.25 billion versus consensus of $9.89 billion, Data Center revenue of $5.8 billion, up 57% year over year, and Q2 guidance of $11.2 billion versus consensus of $10.52 billion.[1][2] Those are the numbers that matter because they moved the conversation from a single vendor's product momentum to a broader demand question: if AMD can raise the bar while still operating inside the same constrained AI hardware stack as Nvidia, where is the scarcity actually being priced?
CNBC's June 30 account of the quarter gave the answer investors were reaching for. The report said the Q2 2026 rally added about $2 trillion of market value across Micron, AMD, and Intel, with gains of $920 billion, $615 billion, and $480 billion respectively, while Nvidia rose 15%.[3] Barclays analyst Anshul Gupta described the move as a "rotation out of AI hyperscalers into AI enablers," a phrase that is useful only if it is not stretched into a claim that Nvidia suddenly lost its central position.[3]

The rally priced constraints, not a clean winner
A stock chart can make the story look cleaner than the supply chain is. AMD's earnings were the catalyst, but the larger repricing happened because investors saw the same constraint set pressing on multiple buyers: high-bandwidth memory, advanced packaging, substrates, power, and networking. If demand is strong enough, the suppliers sitting at those pressure points can gain pricing power even when the end-market GPU share remains heavily skewed toward Nvidia.
That distinction matters. Silicon Analysts estimates Nvidia at roughly 80% AI GPU share and AMD at roughly 5% to 7%, while noting that counting methods can vary by revenue share, unit share, and accelerator definition.[4] Even if AMD's relative growth is structurally important because it starts from a much smaller base, those figures do not support a simple "AMD takes, Nvidia loses" reading.
They do support a different reading: AMD's beat confirmed that demand is broad enough to reward whoever controls scarce inputs. Nvidia can keep its dominant position and still see suppliers rally harder in a given quarter. That is what happens when investors stop valuing only the visible GPU logo and start valuing the parts of the chain without which neither AMD nor Nvidia can ship at the pace customers want.
HBM is where scarcity becomes visible
The most direct evidence came from memory. CNBC, citing Micron's earnings, reported that Micron's gross margin surged to 84.9% from 39% a year earlier.[3] Margins do not move like that because investors have discovered a new slogan for AI. They move because customers need a component that cannot be expanded overnight, and the supplier has more leverage than it did in the prior cycle.
High-bandwidth memory is not an optional decoration on the accelerator board. It determines how much data the processor can feed and how quickly it can do useful work. If HBM supply is tight, the constraint hits Nvidia, AMD, and any other accelerator vendor trying to serve hyperscale AI demand. A stronger AMD guide therefore does not merely say AMD is selling more chips. It also says more HBM stacks are being pulled into booked programs.
Tom's Hardware reported a Micron CEO comment that HBM supply could not meet 50% to 66% of demand.[5] That is a broad statement about supply-demand imbalance, not a precise allocation schedule for any one GPU vendor. Still, it explains why memory names reacted so forcefully: the market was not just buying AMD's upside; it was buying the bottleneck that AMD's upside made harder to ignore.

CoWoS capacity expands, but not fast enough to make it ordinary
Advanced packaging is the second place where the hero-villain version of the story breaks down. AMD and Nvidia may compete for accelerator sockets, but both depend on advanced packaging capacity to turn chips, HBM, interposers, and substrates into usable AI hardware. That makes packaging capacity a shared industrial constraint rather than a brand-specific talking point.
Tom's Hardware reported that TSMC's CoWoS capacity was expected to grow from about 75,000 wafers per month to 120,000 to 130,000 wafers per month by the end of 2026, while still being booked solid.[5] The first half of that sentence sounds like relief. The second half is the part that matters for pricing and allocation.
A capacity increase does not remove a bottleneck if demand grows into it before it opens. It changes who gets how much capacity, when, and at what margin. Nvidia's scale gives it a procurement advantage, but AMD's stronger data-center numbers tell the market that second-source demand is also real. That is a healthier signal for the chain than a narrow argument over quarterly share points.

ABF substrates are less visible, and that is part of the point
Substrates rarely get the same attention as GPUs or HBM because they are buried inside the package, both physically and narratively. But investors do not need the most glamorous bottleneck; they need the bottleneck with leverage. IndexBox reported that Ajinomoto held more than 95% of the ABF substrate market and that ABF prices rose 30% in 2026, citing Semiconductor Engineering.[6]
Those ABF figures should be treated with care because, in the materials available here, they come through a single-source reporting chain. They are still directionally relevant. A concentrated input supplier raising price into an AI hardware buildout is exactly the kind of signal that explains why the rally broadened beyond the chip designers.
This is also where the market-share frame becomes particularly unhelpful. A substrate supplier is not choosing between believing in AMD or believing in Nvidia. It is responding to the volume and urgency of packages moving through the system. If both major accelerator vendors need the same constrained substrate class, then stronger AMD demand can validate a pricing environment that also supports Nvidia's supply base.
Why Nvidia can lag the rally without losing the cycle
Nvidia's 15% gain in CNBC's June 30 tally looked modest beside Micron's 240%, Intel's 216%, AMD's 186%, Marvell's 200%, and Arm's 134%.[3] That comparison is tempting because it gives the quarter a plot. The better interpretation is more mechanical: Nvidia had already been treated as the prime beneficiary of AI accelerator demand, while several enabling suppliers were being repriced from lower expectations.
The Barclays wording matters here. A rotation into "AI enablers" is not automatically a rotation out of Nvidia's end-market importance.[3] It can mean the market is moving one layer down the bill of materials and asking who has underappreciated leverage when accelerators remain difficult to build at scale.
Intel's rally, for example, was tied to a foundry diversification thesis rather than proof that it had already taken the AI accelerator market. Marvell's and Arm's gains reflected the broader infrastructure stack: networking, interconnect, and architecture exposure that becomes more valuable when AI clusters keep expanding.[3] These are adjacent forms of leverage, not clean substitutes for Nvidia's accelerator franchise.
There is a practical procurement lesson inside the stock move. When a customer adds AI capacity, the decision does not stop at choosing the accelerator. It pulls on memory commitments, packaging slots, substrate availability, networking silicon, board capacity, power delivery, and data-center readiness. A rally that spreads across those nodes is often telling the truth more faithfully than a single share chart.
Power and geography add more constraints
The supply chain bottleneck does not end once a packaged accelerator leaves the fab ecosystem. IndexBox cited an Amazon CEO comment describing power as the number one data-center bottleneck, and also reported that Korea accounts for 80% of HBM supply concentration.[6] Those are different constraints, but they point in the same direction: AI hardware demand is being mediated by physical infrastructure, not just by chip design roadmaps.
Geographic concentration matters because resilience is not the same as volume. A supply chain can produce extraordinary revenue growth while still becoming more fragile if the scarce steps are concentrated in a few suppliers, regions, or utilities. That is one reason the broad rally should not be read as effortless abundance. It is a repricing of scarcity.
The next checkpoint is AMD's Q2 report
As of July 19, 2026, AMD had not yet reported Q2 2026 earnings. The next report would typically be expected in early August 2026, so the June stock performance should be treated as a pre-earnings rally built on Q1 results, Q2 guidance, and supply-chain interpretation rather than on published Q2 AMD results.
The test is straightforward. If AMD confirms that data-center demand and forward guidance remain strong, the shared-bottleneck reading gets another piece of support. If guidance weakens or the company points to customer digestion, allocation pressure, or margin limits, the market will have to separate genuine supply-chain health from a quarter-end chase into exposed names.
For now, the narrow conclusion is the defensible one. AMD's Q1 beat did not prove that Nvidia is losing the AI chip cycle. It showed that demand is broad enough to lift the companies controlling the constrained parts of the AI chip supply chain, including suppliers that Nvidia also needs. The August AMD report is the next place to check whether that pressure is still building or merely being extrapolated.
